THE ISSUES

COUNTY EFFICIENCY, Tax Rates, and how we compare to other urban counties in utah

I am committed to the philosophy of conservative government and fiscal responsibility ("Not one red cent!"). Fortunately for the residents of Utah County, we have historically elected Commissioners who have put its citizens first. As a result:

  1. Utah County has the lowest administrative costs per capita of any urban county in the state due to our current form of government (Commission rather than Council, see supporting documents below).

  2. Utah County has the lowest property taxes of any urban county in the state (see supporting document below).

  3. We were able to bond $127 million for reconstruction of county roads at an interest rate of under 4% due to Utah county having the highest credit rating of any county its size in the country as well as our having one of the lowest debt ratios in Utah. (This low interest rate has only been available 18 months of the last 44 years!)

  4. I voted to support an initiative of the Jail Industries director to provide the resources so the jail inmates could raise $29,000 worth of produce annually.

  5. I have worked with State Legislators to pass bills that lower the cost of county government. (For example, I worked with John Dougall to pass HJR1 which eliminated filing requirements for 50% of small businesses on personal property tax while only affecting less than 1% of county revenue! This saves small businesses countless hours and saves the county about 35% in administrative costs in the Business Personal Property tax division (we had been losing dollars counting pennies!))

  6. We returned your tax dollars! We cut restaurant sales tax by over $1.1 million for 2006 and over $350,000 in 2005, due to growth in revenues. (When we take in more than we need, we must give it back to the tax payers!)

These results demonstrate my commitment to be a Conservative, Effective, and a Reliable Republican.

FUTURE COMMITMENTs

If re-elected I commit that:

  1. I will continue to partner with State legislators to reduce the costs of government to the county, its taxpayers, and businesses.

  2. Because private businesses can often provide services less expensively than government, I will continue to evaluate all divisions of county government and make Requests For Proposals for services that the government currently provides less efficiently (ex., the County Assessors’ Office is currently partnering with private businesses to provide lower cost property assessments).

  3. I will work to keep Utah County the most efficient of all urban county governments in Utah!
